520 _aRichard B. Lang was a US Air Corps private with the 19th Bomb Group at Clark Field when the war broke out. After the bombing, he was ordered together with other maintenance men to Del Monte Field in Mindanao, where he stayed until the surrender in May 1942. Instead of surrendering, he evaded the Japanese before and joined the guerrillas under Col. Fertig. He particularly distinguished himself in technical matters, such as outfitting and repairing the 10th Military District’s motor launches, thereby maintaining supply and communication links with the guerrillas in other parts of Mindanao. For his efforts, Lang was given a battlefield commission and ended the war as a 1st Lieutenant. Essentially written by the author Norman Rudi from conversations with Lang and a little research, the book contains a number of spelling (especially in Filipino words and place names) and other errors (as with most books of this genre). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
