520 _aThen Lieutenant Obert was a P-40 fighter pilot in the 17th Pursuit Squadron based in Nichols Field at the outbreak of the war. Obert’s diary covers the day the war started through April 1942; he details his missions and his squadron’s operations in fighting the invading Japanese forces. In January 1942, he was ordered from Bataan to Del Monte Field, where he was based for two weeks. He returned to Bataan in mid-January, flew some of the few remaining planes in desperate missions against the Japanese, before being ordered to Del Monte again just before Bataan surrendered. He made a stop in Cebu, before flying on to Mindanao. He flew some of the last fighter missions in Mindanao before being ordered to Australia. His diary provides details of the life and thoughts of fighter pilots: he had married just before the war and his wife was interned in Santo Tomas. Obert died a year before his diary was published. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
