520 _aThoroughly researched military history, including details from the Japanese side taken from Japanese sources, of the Battle of Zigzag Pass on the Zambales road linking Olongapo to Bataan in 1945. The author was a platoon leader of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, and fought in the battle. Beyond telling his own story, he has written a comprehensive account from all sides. The battle, ferociously fought in mountains, ravines and caves, was a necessary preliminary to ensure the recapture of Bataan and Corregidor from the Japanese, as well as to secure the town of Olongapo and the naval base at Subic. Filipino guerrillas also fought in this bloody battle, and Mann mentions some of their achievements. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
