500 _a This image was carved by a local sculptor on orders of Don Miguel de Cobarrubias. In 1710, Don Miguel settled in Cavite, while studying at the University of Santo Tomas. He came from the village of San Martin de Castañer where Frenchman Simon de Vela had dug the image on May 19, 1934 on the slopes of the "Sierra de Francia", two well known towns of Salamanca and Caceres. His child had a picture of the Virgin which allegedly cured him of an ailment upon application to his body. Out of gratitude he vowed to erect a chapel in her honor in Manila. But as he was in Nueva Caceres (Naga) at the request of Bishop Andres Gonzales, O.P., he decided to build it instead in that place to house a replica of the image.
