Carol Terry Talbot was held prisoner by the Japanese for 3½ years at Los Baños Internment Camp in the Philippines before the accurately documented mass rescue of 2,000 prisoners. - Roderick HallLanguage/Translation Info: EnglishSummary: Carol Terry was one of many Americans who found herself stranded in the Philippines when the ship she was on offloaded its passengers in Manila at the beginning of the war. She was originally bound for India as a missionary, only to find herself almost helpless in Manila, but found support in other American missionaries. She writes about how the Japanese tried to force the American pastors and religious leaders (including the author) to sign a pledge to collaborate; no one did. She was allowed to live outside Santo Tomas Internment Camp, but aided Earl Hornbostel by smuggling radio parts so he could complete a working radio. Eventually she was interned in Santo Tomas, but soon was transferred to Los Baños; she narrates her experiences there and especially at the time of the dramatic liberation by paratroopers and guerrilla forces. She adds a chapter on her work in India after the war. Appendices include a roster of the Los Baños internees and a report of her interview with one of the former Japanese guards of the camp. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
