Ashton starts with describing pre-war Manila, printing his letters to his wife before the war, and then recounting his own experiences as a doctor in the Fort McKinley hospital. He details the battle of Bataan and his role as Chief of Surgery in General Hospital #1 in the rear; and then goes on to narrate the surrender, with the more able patients made to march to Pampanga. Dr. Ashton and his staff, along with the sicker patients were taken to Bilibid Prison by truck; Ashton then describes prison life, labor detail in Tayabas and other incidents faced by the POWs. Liberally illustrated with maps, one of which is a Bataan-era map which the author was able to save, and photographs (including many of his private photos showing the pre-war Philippines). The book is made more valuable by Ashton’s printing several actual documents relating to the prisoners of war, assistance given by Filipinos and other materials which he was able to keep during and after the occupation years. (There are reports on Fassoth’s camp, the USS Canopus, various affidavits and other documents). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
