He describes what happened during the war in the various countries, including the Philippines, and how the peoples commemorate and remember the war. He points out that in most countries, the war is remembered either to develop the nation (as in Singapore), or (as in the case of Thailand) to draw tourists. In many countries, the war is played down in order not to jeopardize relations with Japan. In the case of the Philippines, Dr. Hayase points out the unique situation of being in between the US and Japan, and relying on both after the war. He analyzes war memorials (in particular Corregidor) and Philippine school textbooks, among others.
