Bontoc women (and men) wear ear stretchers and ear plugs in a slit in the ear lobe to prepare it for the earring. The plugs--in no way decorative--can be two short pieces of bamboo forced apart and held by two crossspieces between them, bunches of vegetable pith, wads of sugarcane leaves, or wooden plugs shaped like cork stoppers (Jenks, 184)Source: Albert Ernest Jenks.
