Foreign Service -- Biography | Diplomats -- United States -- Biography | United States Information Agency -- BiographyLanguage/Translation Info: EnglishSummary: A biography of Clifton Forster, son of a ranking American businessman in Manila (Charles H. Foster was also the manager of the Red Cross in the Philippines). He grew up in Manila and had a carefree life, which is described together with his father’s work in the Red Cross. The good life was shattered when the war broke out and he and his family were interned in Santo Tomas. One chapter of this book is devoted to Forster’s experiences in Santo Tomas. The family was repatriated to the US in 1943, but Clifton returned to Manila in 1945. The destruction of Manila in 1945 is detailed. After the war, he married; he and his wife (the author of this book) joined the US Information Service, and together they were able to work with people of various races and backgrounds. The husband and wife team advocated peaceful understanding and dialogue, rather than war, the message which runs throughout the book. Clifton passed away in 2007; Nancy sorted his papers and with her own memories wrote this biography/memoir. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose List(s) this item appears in: Drew's List of Items to Check Out
