The entire diary records daily life, rumors, hardships and hope while in the prisoner of war camp at Karenko, in Taiwan, where he was kept with other high ranking officers of the USAFFE (including Gen. Wainwright), and later Mukden, in Manchuria. Also with Brougher were ranking British and Dutch officers, and the diary allows for comparisons of the different countries’ armies. Although he had started a detailed diary in 1942, that portion was lost in POW camp transfers. The editor, Prof. James, a military historian, provides a well-researched account of Brougher’s war experiences, particularly in Bataan. Brougher was commander of the 11th Division, Philippine Army. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
