He travelled to Manila but was overtaken by war in that city. Determined not to be caught by the Japanese, he sailed to Australia, only to fail the first time. He succeeded the second time, in a harrowing, 32-day voyage on a small banca. He documents his voyage and the brushes with Moros on the way, based on a diary he kept at the time. The first draft of this book was finished in 1944, but could not be published for security reasons; it was finally published fifteen years later. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose Creator
