Miller was a reserve officer called to active service and sent to the Philippines as commander of the 194th Tank Battalion (Minnesota National Guard). He tells of the peacetime training received before being shipped out, the splitting of the original tank unit and dispatch to the Philippines; the outbreak of war (the battalion was in the Clark Field area when the Japanese struck), piecemeal employment of tanks to desperately stop advancing Japanese forces, the withdrawal to Bataan and operations in the peninsula. Miller is quick to criticize senior officers for their lack of understanding on the proper employment of tanks, and for blunders in the withdrawal. He continues on to describe the surrender and the ordeals of the Death March and prison camp life. An important book since it brings the perspective of a civilian-soldier, an officer who was respected by his men, rather than a professional officer. He asks probing questions and analyzes what went wrong. The book was reprinted in 1991, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the war, due to its importance. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
