The great orator of the Propaganda, Graciano, studied at the Seminary of Jaro, Iloilo where he finished his Curso de Filisofia; intended to enroll in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas but lacked the necessary Bachelor of Arts degree requirement; worked for some time at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, then went to Spain and enrolled at the University of Valencia in 1880; transferred to Madrid in 1881, and became a member of the Partido Republicano Progresista na of the Circulo Hispano-Filipino where he was one of the editors of its official organ, the Revista. Even at an early age, he spoke in the defense of his country and people and wrote satirical novellettes like "Fray Botod" and "La Hija de Fraile", ridiculing the ignorance and immoralities of some friars. To stop him from writing, he was offered a good-paying job by Bishop Roman Vigil in 1886 but he declined. In Feb., 1889, he founded in Barcelona the periodical La Solidaridad, and became its first editor until replaced by M.H. del Pilar. He went back to the Philippines to solicit financial assistance from friends and in 1891, upon his return to Spain, founded another weekly El Latigo Nacional. His collection of articles and speeches is found in "Discursos y articulos various". Born 29 December 1856 in Jaro, Iloilo to Placido Lopez and Maria Jacobo Jaena, died of consumption in Barcelona, 20 January 1896.
