This was a period toward the close of the Spanish colonial regime and shortly before the Americans took over the government which subsequently introduced the concept of mass education. As a pioneer in private higher education in the country, Nicanor Reyes is credited with the then unheard of notion that college education should be made available to the working student. This type of student could spare only a few hours after work go to school for a degree. To celebrate the centennial of the F.E.U. founder, it was deemed appropriate to write his biography chronicling the lifetime struggles of the visionary who founded one of academe's respected institutions of learning today. Another imperative for the publication of this biography is that the sources of information about him, in some cases former colleagues and students, are rapidly becoming scarce. Happily for us, the biographer has largely succeeded in getting primary data from such sources. The result is this portrait which paints a lively and moving account of the man Nicanor Reyes and the vision that inspired him to be one of the country's great educators."
