Lapham was an US Army reserve officer who volunteered for service in the Philippines, arriving in mid 1941. He served as an advisor to a Philippine Army unit, served in Bataan, volunteered to join Maj. Claude Thorp in his mission to get through Japanese lines and begin guerrilla warfare behind Japanese lines – in late January 1942, long before Bataan fell. Bataan surrendered, and Thorp’s group lost its reason for being. Rather than surrendering, Lapham formed an independent guerrilla unit, which eventually grew to become the Luzon Guerrilla Armed Forces. Lapham’s unit ambushed the Japanese, obtained intelligence needed by MacArthur, and fought together with returning American troops. The LGAF figured prominently in the raid to liberate prisoners in Cabanatuan in January 1945. This memoir was essentially written by historian Norling, based on Lapham’s memories and cross checking with archival and other sources. This is one of the important books on the guerrillas in Luzon. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose List(s) this item appears in: Bibliography: Dauntless by Marie Silva Vallejo
