It not only served as a place of worship but also as a place of refuge for the people during typhoons and bandit attacks. (Source: Leyte Towns: Histories and Legends, Francisco S. Tantuico, Jr., 1980) Tanauan constituents restored this church constructed by the Jesuit missionaries in 1704. It was turned over to the Augustinians, 1768-1843. Fray Francisco de Paula Marquez repaired and enlarged it in 1850-1860. Later, a transept was added and the patio was surrounded with a thick wall of rock which had a watchtower on each of its four corners for defense against pirates. Edifice withstood hurricane and tidal wave of 1897.
