The church was the fifth one built by the Augustinians in Panay. Founded in 1581 by Governor Gonzalo Ronquillo, the town was formerly named "La Villa de Arevalo" in honor of the Governor''s hometown in Avila, Spain. It was under Oton until 1582 when it became the new capital and hence, the official residence of the alcalde-mayor, the encomendero of Panay and the overseer general of the Spanish garrisons in Moluccas. For nearly a century, Arevalo was a Spanish naval station, a busy seaport, a jumping off point of Spanish expeditions against the Muslims and the Dutch, and the supply base of Spanish garrisons in Moluccas. The town declined by the 1700''s after Governor General Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera had ordered the people to move to La Punta or Iloilo which henceforth became the new capital.
