A very important primary source on Manila under the Japanese. This is the second part of a series printing Dr. Buencamino’s 1942 diary. Buencamino was the head of the National Rice and Corn Corporation and had to deal with the Japanese in their attempt to secure food for their army, while trying to ensure that the Manila residents did not go hungry. This installment covers February 1 to March 22, 1942. -- HALSEMA, James J. “Journey Through the Luzon Battlefield,” pp. 30-36. First person account based on a diary of how the American internees in Baguio were brought to Bilibid Prison in December 1944, passing through Central Luzon. -- TOMIBE, Rokuro (Capt., Imperial Japanese Army). “’The Secret Story of the War’s End,’” pp. 37- 45. Personal account of the Japanese commandant of the internment camp at Baguio. Part of this article was his reminiscences of the camp and some crucial events during the war, which he shared with former internees at a reunion. He wrote this down and enlarged it as an article published in the Japanese magazine "Zembo" (The Complete Picture) in 1977. This is an English translation of the Japanese article, with annotations by James J. Halsema. -- HARTENDORP, [Abraham Van Heyningen]. “The Hartendorp Memoirs V,” pp. 46-69. This installment of Hartendorp’s memoirs covers his experiences during the Commonwealth years, when he was off and on adviser to President Quezon, the approach of war, and the immediate post-war years, when he served as adviser to President Osmeña. Fills in gaps not covered in Hartendorp’s voluminous record of the Japanese occupation. - Prof. Ricardo T. Brief overall account of the American nurses (no mention of Filipina nurses) on Bataan and Corregidor, including what happened to them after surrender (they were interned in Santo Tomas) and after liberation. -- MOORE, Bruce M. “Strong to Endure: The Story of Captain George Moore during World War II, part I,” pp. 45-72. Based on letters, stories told, notebooks and other sources, the experiences of Capt. Moore are retraced by his son. Capt. Moore was an officer in the 45th Infantry (Philippine Scouts) and fought in the defense of Luzon in December 1941, Bataan and became a prisoner of war. This first part of his story covers his arrival in the Philippines in 1940, life in Manila, outbreak of the war, and fighting to delay the Japanese before proceeding to Bataan. Like his father, Bruce Moore is a West Point graduate, commanded troops in the US Army, and retired. Wanting to keep his father’s story alive for future generations, he wrote this book-length narrative. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose; v.28 (2000) - no. 3: George Moore and the 45th Infantry (Part II) / Moore -- Travels by a peripatetic teenager in the 1930s Philippines / Halsema; v.28 (2000) - no. 3: MOORE, Bruce M. “Strong to Endure: The Story of Captain George Moore during World War II, part II,” pp. 4-58. This installment of the experiences of Captain Moore covers January 1 to November 6, 1942. This includes the Bataan campaign, the surrender and Death March, and prison camp in Camp O’Donnell and Cabanatuan. It ends with Moore – and his fellow prisoners – being transported on the Erie Maru, one of the first prison ships, to Davao Penal Colony. - Prof. Ricardo T. This is the last installment of the experiences of Captain Moore and covers the period November 7, 1942 - the end of the war and after. Moore was in Davao Penal Colony for over a year and a half, then was brought back to Cabanatuan, Bilibid, and then the hell ship Oryoku Maru. He survived the series of hell ships and made it to Japan, and finally Mukden in Manchuria, where he was liberated by the Russians. - Prof. Ricardo T. Michael. “A Jesuit Remembers the Japanese Occupation: the Internment of Fr. James Reuter, S.J.,” pp. 9-24. This piece on Fr. Reuter’s wartime experiences is based on an interview he gave the author in 2000. Fr. Reuter, an American Jesuit scholastic, talked about the start of the war, the Japanese, the resistance heroes he knew personally, President Laurel, the liberation of Los Baños internment camp and other topics. -- HOULAHAN, J. Michael. “Two Jesuits Remember the Japanese Occupation: the Internment of Fr. Richard McSorley, S.J.,” pp. 25-39. The title refers to Frs. Reuter (whose experiences were narrated in the previous article) and McSorley. Fr. McSorley was a young American Jesuit who arrived in Manila in 1940. Based on a personal interview and on his published autobiography, Houlahan recounts Fr. McSorley’s war experiences, from the start of the war, through the arrival of the Japanese in Manila, internment and rescue at Los Baños internment camp. -- CHILDRESS, Clyde (U.S. Army retired). “Wendell Fertig’s "'Autobiography’: a Critical Review of They Fought Alone,” pp. 40-72. Childress was an American guerrilla officer in Mindanao who played a key role in organizing and leading his unit against the Japanese. Although he had heard of Col. Fertig’s book (John Keats’ "They Fought Alone," published in 1964), he had not actually read it until the late 1990s, and was shocked by its inaccuracies and falsehoods. Being one of the few officers who could speak authoritatively about the guerrillas of the 10th Military District, he criticizes the book on Fertig, pointing out specific errors and fabrications. This review should be read in order to set the record straight. -- STEINER, Mona Lisa L. “The Hellfire of Manila,” pp. 73-82. A short personal account of a young Austrian mother. Steiner fled Hitler and arrived in the Philippines in time to fall in love, get married and bear two children and teach botany in the University of the Philippines. Before long, World War II reached her and her family. In this article, she describes the terror and fear of fleeing from the Japanese amidst burning houses and murderous Japanese soldiers in Southern Manila, and the joy of reaching American lines. The joy is mixed with sorrow as she sees the victims of the battle. - Prof. Ricardo T.
