She details her life in Manila, prior to the move to Mindanao; pre-war life in Zamboanga, and the advent of war. The Mattocks family evacuated to the mountains but after several months surrendered to the Japanese as food became scarce; they were interned in Zamboanga, and after a few days they were transferred to Davao, to join other internees in a run-down dance hall called Happy Life Blues. Still later, the internees were brought to Santo Tomas Internment Camp, where they were liberated in 1945. Utilizing her diary, her mother’s diary and father’s writings, as well as her own memory, Ms. Marshall reconstructs the wartime period, unique since it is one of the few which deals with internment camps in Mindanao. - Prof. Ricardo T.
