Four eyewitness accounts on the war and occupation in Greater Manila. The common characteristics of all four boys (between the ages of 9 and 12) were that they were white non-Americans with European roots who were technically neutral and thus were not interned by the Japanese.

Roderick Hall was born in the Philippines of a Scottish father (interned in Santo Tomas) and Scottish-Spanish mother; Hans Walser was also born in Manila but of a Swiss father and American mother. Hans Hoeflein, and Juergen Goldhagen arrived in the Philippines after the Nazis in Germany went after their fathers.

They had common experiences before the war, which they narrate; during the war, they were not interned by the Japanese and thus experienced the Japanese occupation directly, from different locations in Metro Manila – some right inside the battle area, others safe in the suburbs.

Sixty years after the war, they recall their childhood in war and reflect on the experience. The four separate narratives are grouped in chronological order, and allow comparison of their experiences and observations. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
