The family had for three generations lived in Canton, China; the author’s father was in the merchant marine. Realizing that war was imminent, he moved his family to Hong Kong, but when war seemed imminent, they were sent to Singapore. Enroute, the war broke out and their ship was diverted to Manila. Desmond’s father stayed on in Hong Kong and was interned by the Japanese there. The author in the meantime was caught in Manila by the outbreak of the war, and was interned in Santo Tomas. After three years they were liberated and united, a tribute to the strength of the family. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose ER -
