N2  - Personal account of a US Army officer who was an officer in the famous 26th Cavalry (Philippine Scouts). This detailed narrative begins with Whitehead’s departure from the US in January 1941, his arrival in and impressions of the Philippines and the Philippine Scouts.

He describes pre-war training, deployment at the start of the war, action against the Japanese in Northern Luzon. Whitehead was separated from his unit in the confusion of battle, and after a long period of evading the Japanese, he managed to make it to the island of Panay. He details people he met and the different factions among Filipinos and Americans. Eventually, he surrendered to the Japanese, who sent him to other islands to convince “unsurrendered” soldiers to give up. He escaped from the Japanese, and, with some Filipinos, was able to make the long voyage from Tawi-Tawi to Australia by open boat.
