Focuses on the American side of the liberation campaign, and concentrates on MacArthur’s winning President Roosevelt's commitment to return to the Philippines, the land and naval battles for Leyte, the liberation of Cabanatuan and Los Baños camps, the Battle of Manila and the retaking of Bataan and Corregidor. Based partly on interviews with veterans and personal accounts. Breuer, a prolific writer of World War II histories, is a World War II veteran himself, but as is typical with most American works the Filipinos play only supporting roles (He names a few guerrillas but not the important ones). Major guerrilla battles like Ipo Dam and Bessang Pass, as well as the liberation by guerrillas and towns in the Visayas and Mindanao are not mentioned. The author is not familiar with Tagalog or Filipino; he translates “Mabuhay” as “Victory.” - Prof. Ricardo T.
