KW - Prisoners of war KW - Philippines KW - Biography KW - United States N2 - Personal memoir of an American woman who taught music at Manila’s American School before the war. She writes about life in Manila before the war, with her husband and children; the start of the war and evacuation to Cavite; return to Manila in time for the Japanese to take Manila. She and her family were interned in Santo Tomas, but because one of her daughters became very sick, was ordered to live outside camp for a while. She returned to Santo Tomas, where she gave birth to a son. Apart from the children keeping her strong, a violin she had bought before her marriage proved to be a saving grace, as it allowed her to teach children some music (and get paid for it), as well as give small concerts to relieve the boredom. In 1944, she and her family were transferred to Los Baños, where they were liberated in 1945. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose ER -
