Tagarao served as a non-commissioned officer, so this account is unique among the Filipino accounts since most were written by officers. This book begins with the author already in Bataan, in January 1942, and describes the experience of being in the front lines with the 42nd Infantry, 41st Division. This division was commanded by Gen. Vicente Lim, the first Filipino graduate from West Point; it was composed of qualified officers who commanded reservists who came from the farms of Southern Luzon. The division was among the strongest in Bataan, and earned the name “Fighting 41st” and “Rock of Bataan.” Tagarao was an active writer even before the war; he continued writing after the war, although he was a lawyer by profession. - Prof. Ricardo T.
