The author is an American lawyer who was in the Philippines during the Vietnam War; he writes for a general audience and thus explains the Philippines, its people and culture in simple terms; at times the book reads like a tourist guide. Some of his characters are real (such as Chick Parsons), but others seem fictional. The author does not explain whether this is history or historical fiction; he cites no sources and has no acknowledgement so it is difficult to tell. The book has a number of historical errors, if it is history: on p. 59, for example, he has one of his characters growing up in Forbes Park (Forbes Park was established after World War II). - Prof. Ricardo T.
