Intensely personal and literate, this memoir covers the Bataan campaign and was written in 1942, after his release from the Camp O’Donnell prison camp. Atienza was in command of the engineer battalion of the 41st Division, a Philippine Army division manned by Filipinos from the Southern Tagalog provinces and led by the first Filipino graduate from West Point, Gen. Vicente Lim. Atienza describes the state of his unit at the start of the war – ill-prepared and poorly armed and equipped. But the division proved to be one of the toughest units in Bataan. Because of his professionalism, Atienza was later made executive officer of the 42nd Infantry Regiment, 41st Division, rising from captain to major. He would have become regimental commander (and lieutenant colonel) had the defense of Bataan lasted a few more days. The memoir ends with the beginning of the Death March. Concluding the book are a biographical sketch of the author and the roster of officers of the 41st Division. Reprinted by the 41st Division Association in 2003. - Prof. Ricardo T.
