Johnson was a ranking Philippine Scout officer (Operations Officer of the 57th Infantry Regiment) when the war broke out; he led his men in combat in Bataan. He surrendered as ordered to on April 9, 1942 and went to the Death March. He survived three and a half years of imprisonment under the Japanese. His experiences in the Philippines further developed his leadership skills, which in turn were further strengthened in the Korean and Vietnam wars. The section on World War II is heavily based on a lengthy interview (oral history) conducted by the U.S. Military History Institute in 1972. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose ER -
