He was an officer in the 57th Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts), and fought in Bataan; he was captured there in April 1942 and went on the Death March. He never returned home, having died in one of the prisoner of war camp in Japan. Since he did not return, the author of this book pieced together available evidence from letters, contacts with Bataan veterans and other sources to retrace his uncle’s story. This book is also the story of Jerome’s father, who fought with the US government to obtain his son’s War Risk Insurance, which is initially denied. Only after ten years battling red tape – and seeking the help of congressmen, senators and even the president – was he successful. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose ER -
