The nurse (the book’s author), researches about the flag’s owner, gets in touch with his family, and goes to Japan to return the flag. In doing so she fleshes out the story of one Japanese soldier, Yoshiharu Tsunoi, an artist and not physically fit, who was drafted in 1944, sent to Bataan and was killed in the fighting. The flag was recovered by an American GI (Jesse Campbell, who was with the 38th Infantry Division), who in turn passed it to Boisclare, who brought it back to the Tsunoi family. - Prof. Ricardo T.
