He gave up a good job in Shanghai for a farming career in Canada, but was unsuccessful. He returned to Shanghai and led a colorful career before he fled to Canada when the Sino-Japanese War broke out. He returned to China as a Protestant missionary, but his ship was diverted to Manila where he was caught by the war. Stranded, he proceeded to Baguio but was captured by the Japanese there and interned for three years. Ms. Ogle, a Protestant missionary, got to know Wolfe in camp; she writes about his experiences in Camp John Hay, in Camp Holmes, the transfer to Bilibid in December 1944, and liberation in 1945 in three chapters of this book. She continues on with his post war missionary career: he returns to China, is captured by the Chinese Communists and got out just in time. - Prof. Ricardo T.
