He describes China and Manila (and Cavite) before the war, his assignment to the destroyer Pope, and operations of the Asiatic Fleet in the defense of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Only briefly covers the Philippines, before and at the start of the war: the Asiatic Fleet itself was ordered to pull out and not to defend the Philippines. His destroyer was sunk in a naval battle and Lt. Michel became a prisoner of war of the Japanese. The bulk of the book is on his life as prisoner of war in the Dutch East Indies, Nagasaki and Mukden, China. This manuscript was originally written in 1948, when Lt. Michel’s memory was still fresh; it was published around fifty years later. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose UR - https://issuu.com/filipinasheritagelibrary/docs/rhc-013569?e=18015266/45895156 ER -
