Not an oral history per se, since Astor writes the main text and quotes piecemeal from his interviews or personal memoirs. Covers the major battles – the start of the war, Bataan and Corregidor, surrender, Death March and prison camps; Leyte and the Kamikazes; the Lingayen Gulf invasion and drive to Manila, Battle of Manila; other Luzon fronts; and briefly on the Visayas and Mindanao - from different perspectives, from generals and admirals down to privates and seamen. Astor, a World War II veteran and journalist, is not too familiar with the Philippines and there are a number of spelling and other errors in the book. The Filipinos are only a backdrop in this book, with the Americans gaining the spotlight. - Prof. Ricardo T.
