Garcia Pub. KW - Philippines KW - History KW - Japanese occupation, 1942-1945 N2 - This two-volume history of World War II and the Japanese occupation of the Philippines is the classic basic, concise, and comprehensive history of the period from a Filipino point of view. Agoncillo, noted Filipino nationalist historian, lived through the war and injects some of his own observations and experiences in these books. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose ; Volume I covers pre-war Philippines-Japan relations, the road to war, the outbreak of the war and the defense campaign, the USAFFE surrender, the Death March, the political dimension of the occupation (the Philippine Executive Commission and the Japanese-sponsored Philippine Republic), and the educational and religious impositions by the Japanese. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose; Volume II of this history covers the economic and cultural aspects of the occupation, as well as the guerrilla movement, the Commonwealth government-in-exile and finally the return of the Americans and the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese rule. This volume also provides several valuable documents as appendices. The volumes are strong on some points, a bit weak in others, but they represent an attempt at a comprehensive history. Since the two volumes were published in 1965 (they were reprinted in 2001 without any editorial changes), portions are now outdated with the appearance of new material. Still these two volumes are basic works on the war in the Philippines. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose ER -
