N2  - This is the first serious full-length book to be written about the Battle of Manila since the 1940s.

Written by a Filipino free-lance historian, it draws much of its information from the proceedings and exhibits of the trial of Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita, together with an array of published and unpublished materials.

A long introduction (about a third of the book) narrates Manila’s long history, from the coming of Legazpi until the outbreak of war in 1941. The remaining two-thirds of the book detail the battle itself, day by day.

Aluit criticizes not only the Japanese, in particular Adm. Iwabuchi, but also MacArthur, for the destruction of Manila. He tries to analyze both Japanese and American actions and finds both at fault. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
