Fashioned after the Visayan banca, it is swift enough to chase a school of fish. Unlike other watercraft typical in Mindanao, it has no adornments, although the prow (pamalung) and stern (tangkap) are painted in bright-colored enamel. Like most fishing boats in the area, the parao has outriggers (katig) and is provided with either an inboard motor or a sail.
