N1  - This unfinished door with the bas-relief carving depicting the artist’s concept of purgatory is over a hundred years old. The unknown woodcarver intended it for the cathedral of Palo, Leyte. In the scene, Christ hangs on the cross, blood pouring copiously from his side into a chalice held by two cherubs. The precious contents spills over and rains down comfortingly on the souls in purgatory, among whom are a pope and a mitered bishop. From a cloud above, God the Father looks down on the scene, while to one side of the Cross stands Mary, a knife piercing her heart.; print
