Ivory head and hands were carved separately and later pegged to crude wooden frames hidden by richly embroidered costume. In the ornate style there is a tendency to achieve realistic detail and a certain theatrical flavour; images tend to look like dolls rather than santos. Ornamentation forms an integral part in the ornate style such that without it there is no statue; print
