Bound for Spain to recruit new ministers for the islands, Fray Rodrigo de San Miguel passed by Mexico and received from the "Carmelita s Descalzos del Convento de San Jose" the image of Ntra. Sra. del Carmen. The statue was brought to Manila in 1617 and enshrined in a chapel constructed in a sitio near Sampaloc (called Calumpang). The church, now known as San Sebastian, remains to be the sanctuary of the image whose feast the devotees celebrate on January 21; print
