N1  - The present ivory image was made by a Chinese craftsman, commissioned and given to the church by a devotee Governor-General Luis Perez Dasmariñas. A fire in 1603 broke out in the city premises, but the image was unharmed. It survived the various earthwuakes that destroyed the church in 1645, 1863 and the destruction of Intramuros in 1945. Though never destroyed,it was disfigured in 1762, during the sack of Manila by the British, and vestiges of the profanation are still evident on the virgin''s neck and the child's arm. She is venerated every 2nd Sunday of October in the Feast of La Naval. See "Landmarks of Manila" by Visitacion de la Torre
