Patricio Mariano, one of the noted, zarzuelistas and operetta writers of his time, was born on March 1, 1877, in Santa Cruz, Manila. His parents, Petronilo Mariano and Dionisia Geronimo, sent him to Ateneo for his primary and secondary courses. He then took up bookkeeping at the Escuela de Artes Oficios. At the Liceo de Manila he received his A.B. degree. Shortly before he joined the revolution in 1896, Mariano worked in the typography shop of Jose Dizon, a Katipunan leader. After the revolution he found employment in the Senate. Mariano is better known for his zarzuelas and dramas which he wrote during his spare time. They usually dealt with love, patriotism and social conditions. "Ang Anak ng Dagat" is easily regarded as his best although it was the one-act drama "Ang Pakakak" which won for him the Renacimiento Award in 1913. He likewise translated in Tagalog the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" and the third act of "La Traviata." Among his other works were: "Sampaguita," "Luha''t Dugo," "Deni," "Silanganan," "Tulisan," "Dahil sa Watawat," and "Lihim at Pag-ibig."
