N1  - A jurist from Kalibo, Aklan, Mapa succeeded Chief Justice Cayetano Arellano in 1920 by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson''s appointment. As chief justice he penned landmark decisions on banks and public lands. Photoengraving of jurist. Another illustrious Filipino jurist during the American regime was Victorino Mapa, in whose honor a public high school in Manila was named. A native of Kalibo, Aklan, he wa born on February 25, 1855, and grew up in Iloilo where he first attended school. At the Letran and Santo Tomas he studied philosophy and obtained a doctorate''s degree. Then he received two degrees in law at the same institution. In 1887 he went back to Iloilo to practise law, was elected capitan municipal of Iloilo City in 1893 and was reelected in 1895. He was President of the Tribunal of Justice and Counselor of the Federal Government of the Visayas during the Revolution. Mapa was one of the first Filipinos named to the Supreme Court when it was created in 1901. There he served as Associate Justice for 13 years. Then he was named Secretary of Justice and Finance. In 1920 he became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court but had to resign after a year due to failing health. Justice Mapa died on April 14, 1927.
