Born in 1883 on Calle Juan Luna opposite La Insular Bldg., Alfonso''s forbears arrived in Manila from Amoy, China. He was sent to China when he was only seven years old to attend the Anglo-Chinese College in Foochow. Fourteen years later, he came back to Manila, settled in Cebu and took charge of several commercial establishments in that southern island. He severed all business connections in Cebu in 1924 and left for Manila.
