Marker in front of the church traces a brief history of the edifice which was constructed in 1683 and finished in 1698. The original church and the town was razed to the ground by the Dutch in 1640. It was replaced by a second one burned 5 years later; and a third erected in 1650 and destroyed by earthquakes. The fourth church was burned again on April 11, 1778.
