Cubero established guerrilla headquarters in the mountains and launched ambushes against the Japanese, culminating in a major attack against the Japanese in the outskirts of Tagbilaran, the capital of the province. Cubero, a.k.a. Francisco Salazar, was killed in that encounter on October 22, 1942, but inspired the guerrillas to fight on. Is in three parts: Part I being a summary of important places in Salazar’s life; Part II, by Barrera, being his prize winning 1970 biography of Salazar (in a contest sponsored by the provincial and city governments), and Part III being an account of Salazar’s last dramatic battle, in detail. Appendices include additional vignettes on Salazar’s life; accounts of other guerrilla leaders in Bohol, books written on the Bohol resistance movement and a list of Bohol veterans. Barrera was a teenage guerrilla during the war and knew Salazar personally; Israel was five years old when the war started; his father was arrested, tortured and killed by the Japanese. - Prof. Ricardo T.
