Kumai was Adjutant of the 37th Independent Infantry Battalion, the Japanese Army unit which garrisoned Iloilo and fought against the Filipino guerrillas. Kumai provides the Japanese side of the occupation in this rare first-person account, and their difficulties in trying to subdue the guerrilla resistance forces. Kumai was charged as a war criminal after the war, and served time in prison; after his release he made several trips to Iloilo not only to seek reconciliation but also to memorialize the people who died as a result of the war (an estimated 2,000 Japanese soldiers, 1,300 Filipino guerrillas and 10,000 civilians – among them several Japanese who were ordered to commit suicide). This book is a translation of Kumai’s original book in Japanese ("Firipin no Chi To Doro: Taiheiyo Sen Saiaku no Gerira Sen")["Blood and Mud in the Philippines: The Worst Guerrilla War in the Pacific War"], originally published in 1977, with additional material – appendices (chronology and documents), photographs, and notes which explain some aspects of Kumai’s original writing. - Prof. Ricardo T.
