She was the mother of ten children (the eldest, Maximo “Max” Soliven, became a noted journalist). Mrs. Soliven’s husband volunteered for the Philippine Army and became a reserve officer; he was called to duty and served in Bataan, endured the Death March and concentration camp, only to succumb to disease months after his release. The bereaved but indefatigable Pelagia valiantly took up the task of raising their nine children (the youngest died shortly before her husband; her father also died during the war). Almost half the book is devoted to her wartime experiences (some in Manila; the remaining months in Ilocos Sur), including letters from her husband while a prisoner of war. After the war, she opened a dress shop and managed to send her children through college. An inspiring book on a woman who could not be defeated. - Prof. Ricardo T.
