While the nightmarish experiences of Korean women had been exposed earlier, no Filipina woman came forward to recount her ordeals until 1992, when she responded to radio appeals for Filipinas to come out in the open. Fondly known as “Lola Rosa,” Henson was raped by a Japanese officer in 1942 near Ft. McKinley, in Rizal province. Her family moved to their hometown of Angeles, Pampanga, where Henson was taken by the Japanese and forced to become a comfort woman – a forced prostitute – to be raped by numerous Japanese soldiers daily. Rescued by the Hukbalahap guerrillas, she tried to put her horrible experiences behind her, but got caught in the midst of the fighting between the post-war Huks and the Philippine government. In this autobiography, she tells of her ordeals – and her courage to face up to them. - Prof. Ricardo T.
