Called to active duty in 1941, he was sent to the Philippines and was assigned to the 88th Field Artillery Regiment (Philippine Scouts). He saw service in Bataan, marched the Death March and endured months in prison camp, before he escaped from a prison ship off Mindanao in September 1944. Aided by guerrillas, he was eventually evacuated to Australia by submarine (the Narwhal). While a prisoner of war, he made use of his training as a priest by aiding his fellow prisoners and organizing prayers and religious services. After the war, Morrett went to China as a full-fledged missionary, remaining there until just before the Communist take over in 1949. - Prof. Ricardo T.
