Based on the personal experiences of the author, who was the editor of the Philippines Herald before the war. With the outbreak of war, Romulo became a member of MacArthur’s staff, based in Corregidor. He went to Bataan several times and wrote of the men he met, many of whom he knew before the war. In Corregidor, Romulo wrote the scripts for the Voice of Freedom, broadcast to all freedom-loving Filipinos to counter Japanese propaganda. Romulo was dramatically evacuated by a rickety plane just as Bataan was surrendering to the Japanese; he was sent to Australia and then to the US, where he wrote this book. Dramatic, intended to capture the attention of Americans, this book was a best seller when it was first published. Romulo was critical of some of the allies of the US, particularly the British and the Dutch; some of these lines were not noticed by the US War Department before publication and thus had to be blacked out after the book was published. (Later editions of the book were able to restore some of the censored portions). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
